Planning a Trip to Xlendi Bay in Gozo ? Here’s What You Need to Know

Beaches | 0 min read |

If you’re heading to Malta with a beach-hopping itinerary in mind, then make sure to pencil in Xlendi Bay on your list of must-visits. Tucked along the southwest coast of Gozo, this scenic bay is the kind of place that captures your heart the moment you arrive.

Alongside other top beach spots on Malta’s sister island—like the iconic red sands of Ramla Bay or the tranquil cove at Hondoq—Xlendi makes for a fantastic day trip. Whether you’re after swimming, snorkelling, or simply enjoying a good meal with a sea view, this charming bay has you covered.

So, if you’re planning a visit to Xlendi Beach during your holiday in Malta, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Why should Xlendi Bay be on your Malta itinerary?

Xlendi Bay is a picture-perfect cove hugged by dramatic cliffs, calm turquoise waters, and a village brimming with character. Once a quiet fishing village, it has grown into a laid-back seaside resort popular with both locals and visitors year-round.

The small beach, made up of sand and smooth pebbles, is great for families thanks to its shallow shoreline. Just beyond the beach, the rocky edges drop off into deeper waters, perfect for snorkelling, swimming, and diving.

With reef formations and hidden underwater tunnels, the bay is a favourite among diving enthusiasts, and there are several nearby dive centres offering gear and guided trips for all levels.

How do I get to Xlendi Beach in Gozo?

First things first, you’ll need to hop on the Gozo Ferry from Ċirkewwa, located at Malta’s northern tip. Direct buses from Valletta and other towns make this easy, with travel times ranging from 45 minutes to just over an hour. Ferries depart regularly, every 30 to 45 minutes, and the crossing to Mġarr Harbour in Gozo takes just 15 minutes.

If you’re not travelling with a car, the passenger-only Fast Ferry from Valletta’s Lascaris Wharf is another great option. It’s a smooth 45-minute ride to Malta’s sister island.

Once you arrive at Mġarr Harbour, getting to Xlendi is simple. You catch the TD30 bus. This direct service connects Mġarr Harbour to Xlendi Bay, running every 30 minutes from Monday to Friday.

Alternatively, take Route 301 to Victoria (Rabat), Gozo’s main town, then switch to Route 306, which heads straight to Xlendi. Just ask the driver if the bus continues to Xlendi.

When is the best time to visit Xlendi Bay?

If you’re heading to Gozo for a swim or snorkel, the peak summer months from July to September offer warm seas and sunny skies, perfect for a beach day. Just keep in mind, Xlendi Bay can get quite busy during this time, especially on weekends. It’s best to arrive early to grab a good spot by the water. And if you’re planning lunch at one of the popular waterfront restaurants, we strongly recommend booking a table ahead to avoid waiting in the midday heat.

That said, Xlendi isn’t just for summer. In the quieter off-peak months, it’s a charming place to stroll, enjoy a peaceful coffee by the sea, or explore nearby countryside trails and coastal viewpoints.

Is Xlendi Bay safe for kids to swim in?

Yes. Xlendi Bay is a great spot for families with children. The beach itself is a small sandy and pebbly patch, and the water near the shore is shallow and gentle, ideal for little ones to splash about safely. Lifeguards may not always be present, so it’s still best to keep an eye on younger swimmers.

For the more adventurous, the bay’s rocky edges offer deeper swimming spots and great conditions for snorkelling. The area is also known for its beautiful underwater landscape, including reef formations and tunnel caves, making it a hit with divers. Several local diving centres offer gear rental, guided dives, and lessons for beginners looking to explore beneath the surface.
