Our Story

1981 It all started when Angelo Xuereb, the visionary Chairman of the AX Group, decided to venture into the tourism industry. Despite the young age, he spearheaded the development of the Sunny Coast Holiday Complex in Qawra. And so, our exciting journey in the world of hospitality began.

1987 The opening of Suncrest 4-Star Hotel in Qawra, the largest hotel at the time was a defining phase for AX Hotels. ‘‘The Suncrest set the standard for everything we would go on to achieve as a Group. We created the ‘wow factor’ for our guests and exceeded expectations’’ said Angelo Xuereb.

1996 Recognizing the immense value of preserving the island's existing heritage, AX restored Palazzo Capua, a 19th-century Palazzo Capua in Sliema, returning it to its former architectural splendour. Today, Palazzo Capua offers a combination of conferencing and accommodation facilities, all set within its rich historical ambiance.

1997 Embracing distinctive Victorian-inspired elegance, AX The Victoria Hotel opened its doors in 1997 and quickly became renowned for its personalised service, attracting repeat customers year after year.

2007 The opening of AX The Palace in Sliema marked an important milestone as we ventured into the 5-star market. This distinctive, urban five-star hotel is inspired by the pulse and passion of a city centre hotel. At The Palace, we offer a unique experience of genuine hospitality.

2009 With a sound family succession plan in place, Claire Xuereb steps into the role of AX Hotels Director. Inspired by her father's determination and visionary spirit, Ms. Xuereb was appointed to oversee the management of all the Group's hotels, carrying forward the legacy of excellence in hospitality.

2017 AX Hotels celebrated the official opening of its first boutique hotel accommodation in the heart of Valletta. Guests are treated to an array of spacious, contemporary rooms, equipped with the latest technology. Welcome to AX The Saint John, where history meets contemporary city lifestyle.

2019 Having achieved success with The Saint John in Valletta, AX Hotels continued with its masterplan to attract a new market of luxury travellers to the Capital City. Renaissance grandeur meets contemporary aesthetics in this stunning palazzo in Valletta, where tailored experiences and Michelin-starred dining await.

2023 We recently launched a brand-new destination concept located at the former site of the Seashells Resort at Suncrest- AX ODYCY Hotel. Welcoming its first guests in June 2023, the ODYCY Hotel has been designed as a year-round destination with a wide variety of restaurants, facilities and amenities.

2025 Opened in 2025, The Verdala Wellness Hotel is perched on the coveted Tal-Virtù ridge in Rabat, just moments away from the ancient citadel of Mdina. Rooted in serenity and purpose, the hotel is dedicated to delivering an enriching experience that nurtures holistic wellness, for every guest who walks through its doors.
